Professor mestre e orientador da Escola de Direito do Centro Universitário Funorte é destaque na literatura com a publicação do capítulo”A proteção dos povos indígenas pelo direito internacional dos direitos humanos: análise do Caso Ângela Poma Poma vs. Peru no livro “Direito e Desenvolvimento: um diálogo entre saberes”, escrito em co-autoria com Camila Batigniani Pimenta Teixeira. O trabalho tem como foco os povos indígenas e as violações perpetradas por empresas. O objetivo, segundo Gabriel Pedro Moreira Damasceno, é alertar sobre o descaso e as dificuldades relacionadas aos povos indígenas seja no aspecto cultural epistemológico, religioso ou até mesmo ao fator estético.
Graduado em Direito, e com várias especializações, Gabriel coleciona um belo currículo com vários artigos publicados sendo 8 artigos em periódicos , 1 livro “O Direito Internacional a partir do Sul Global”, 12 capítulos de livro e 13 trabalhos em anais de eventos.
Segundo o autor, todo processo em discussão do seu mais recente trabalho, tem como chave o início da colonização, momentos esses que a cultura europeia tentava reprimir as manifestações locais e enraizadas dos índios impondo costumes, hábitos e religião. “Então, na verdade eu acredito que não se trata apenas de uma de uma questão de proteção cultural dos povos indígenas. Eu acho que vai além disso. Acho que diferenças, elas não são apenas diferenças culturais, são diferenças epistemológicas, são diferenças culturais, são diferenças de visão de mundo, são diferenças religiosas são diferenças do modo de ser, do modo de pensar, do modo de se relacionar com a natureza entre muitas outras.”
Ainda segundo Damasceno, a forma de pensar e de priorizar apenas um lado é preocupante, pois muitas das vezes existe uma negligência em relação a um povo, etnia, no caso dos direitos humanos referem-se aos reflexos desse povo e do que eles manifestam. “Na verdade, a gente tem que começar a perguntar porque quando perguntamos qual é a visão dos direitos humanos sobre os povos indígenas, enxergamos os povos indígenas como um objeto de estudo e não como de fato como é, pessoas como seres, como grupos plurais que eles são. Então, acho que na verdade, a gente tem que começar a pensar que é o contrário. O que os povos indígenas entendem sobre os direitos humanos. O que são os direitos humanos a partir dos povos indígenas? E, como essa visão pode dialogar, como aprender e crescer na preservação do mundo através de um panorama de fato cosmopolita e não apenas ocidental”, destacou.
Damasceno relatou ainda sobre os planos para carreira e o que espera após a publicação. Ele também frisou que esta iniciativa, abriu-lhe o leque para alcançar outras vertentes, a exemplo, publicações em um idioma estrangeiro, a fim de conscientizar outros povos sobre a urgência e respeito quando se trata de uma cultura, em específico o povo indígena.
”Meu plano a curto prazo agora é terminar meu doutorado, já estou finalizando ele e nos próximos dez anos eu quero estar trabalhando com pesquisa, me desenvolvendo academicamente, produzindo, torcendo aí para que a a nossa instituição consiga abrir programas de pós-graduação em mestrado e doutorado, e que consigamos alcançar esses objetivos para crescermos juntos.”
Retomando ao assunto da pesquisa, que lhe rendeu a publicação do capítulo sobre povos indígenas, o professor do Centro Universitário Funorte faz algumas indagações a serem consideradas pelos leitores de seu texto: “quem realmente é a parte prejudicada e como contornar a situação e evitar maiores danos e perdas irreversíveis?”.
Para o docente, “ o “outro” não tem que ser o nosso objeto de pesquisa, a gente tem que olhar o outro como um ser, então acho que todas as pessoas têm seus grupos sociais e não devem ser vistos de forma hierarquizada como infelizmente tem sido feito. É preciso olhar para os estudos étnico-raciais através de uma perspectiva de populações geralmente vulnerabilizadas e subalternizadas”, revela.
